What Grants Are Available For Replacing Windows?

Replacing your windows with energy-efficient alternatives like double glazing can significantly decrease your household’s carbon footprint. But besides the environmental benefits, there’s also a number of financial benefits that come with using energy-efficient windows.

Several schemes and grants have been introduced to incentivise UK homeowners and renters to switch to energy-efficient measures, such as double glazing. Making a few small changes to your property could save you some serious cash.

In this article, we discuss the grants available for window replacement in the UK in 2023.

Energy Company Obligation Scheme (ECO4)

ECO4, launched in April 2022 and running until March 2026, obliges energy suppliers to support energy-inefficient homes occupied by low-income residents. The initiative helps alleviate cost-of-living pressures by offering free energy-efficiency upgrades, including double glazing installation. ECO4 is open to recipients of various benefits like Income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Universal Credit and Income Support.

Warmer Homes Scotland

First established in 2015, Warmer Homes Scotland is a Scottish Government initiative targeting low-income, energy-inefficient homes. The scheme provides up to £7,500 (or £9,000 in rural areas) for energy-efficiency improvements, including replacing single glazed windows with double glazing. However, if you already have double glazed units installed, you are not eligible. Only homeowners and new home builders who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for this grant.

Affordable Warmth Scheme in Northern Ireland

This scheme, which started in 2014, provides up to £7,500 for energy-efficiency improvements to low-income households, including new double glazing installation. Homeowners and private property tenants with a total gross income of less than £23,000 per year are eligible. The amount granted depends on an inspection of the home and the extent of the work required.

Home Upgrade Scheme

Starting in April 2023, the Home Upgrade Scheme will allocate £1.4 billion in funding to local authorities and social housing providers. The funding will cover energy efficiency measures in vulnerable homes and homes off the gas grid with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D and below. These measures include loft insulation, draught-proofing and the installation of new doors and windows. This scheme targets over 115,000 homes in England and could save tenants between £220 and £400 annually on energy bills.

Green Homes Grants for Double Glazing Windows and Doors (NOW CLOSED!)

Please note that the Green Homes Grant scheme, which launched in September 2020 and ended on March 31st, 2021, is no longer available. This scheme was part of the government’s plan to ‘build back greener’ and provided grants for homeowners to improve insulation or install renewable heating, with additional grants available for windows and doors.

Several grants are available to help homeowners and renters install energy-efficient windows like double glazing. And at Bridgewater Glass, we can provide the installations for you.
