What is a Standard Door Size in the UK?
Most doors in UK homes – especially modern ones – tend to look and feel the same size, but there’s actually more variety than you might realise. Having said that, in the vast majority of cases, there’s only a limited number of different sizes that are used, and most suppliers should be able to supply the right size for your home from stock.
Nevertheless, it is important that you make sure that you are ordering the correct size from the outset, otherwise you might either have to suffer delays while waiting for the right one and/or find yourself having to pay for extra delivery charges. It’s always worth measuring every door that you’re replacing, because there might be minor variations not immediately evident to the naked eye.
The Bridgewater Glass team has put together this brief – yet hopefully helpful – guide to standard door sizes in the UK.
What are standard external door sizes in the UK?
Probably the most common external door size in the UK is 1981mm high x 838mm wide x 44mm deep, although doors with the same height and depth but a slightly narrower width of 762mm are also commonly used.
The following table contains the standard external door sizes you’re most likely to come across, all of which should be readily available in the UK.
Millimetres | Feet & Inches | Inches |
1981mm x 838mm x 44mm | 6’6″ x 2’9″ x 1.7″ | 78″ x 33″ x 1.7″ |
1981mm x 762mm x 44mm | 6’6″ x 2’6″ x 1.7″ | 78″ x 30″ x 1.7″ |
2032mm x 813mm x 44mm | 6’8″ x 2’8″ x 1.7″ | 80″ x 32″ x 1.7″ |
2032mm x 864mm x 44mm | 6’8″ x 2’10” x 1.7″ | 80″ x 34″ x 1.7″ |
2134mm x 915mm x 44mm | 7’0″ x 3’0″ x 1.7″ | 84″ x 36″ x 1.7″ |
What are standard internal door sizes in the UK?
Things are a little more complicated when it comes to internal doors, although in new builds minimum door widths are governed by Building Regulations. However, the most common size you’ll come across is 1981mm high x 762mm wide x 35mm deep. This size is commonly referred to as a ‘2 by 6’ door owing to its width in Imperial measurements (2’6″).
Although a standard door width in the UK is 762mm, other common widths that should be readily available include 838mm (33″), 686mm (27″) and 610mm (24″) – any smaller than that and you’ll probably be looking at doors for storage cupboards.
Again, it’s important to emphasise that if you are ordering multiple internal doors, it’s essential to measure each door to make sure there are no differences. It’s possible that some older doors in your property might have been trimmed to fit into narrower spaces or to allow for new frames to be installed.
