How are Mirrors Made?

Mirrors are a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, from the bathroom to the bedroom, and even in our cars. But have you ever wondered how these reflective surfaces are made?

In this article, we’ll delve into the fascinating process behind the creation of mirrors and explore how we at Bridgewater Glass craft bespoke mirrors for our customers.

The history of mirrors

The earliest manufactured mirrors were pieces of polished stone such as obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass. These rudimentary mirrors were used as far back as 6000 BC by the ancient Mesopotamians.

It wasn’t until the 1st century AD that glass mirrors, similar to the ones we use today, were first produced. These early glass mirrors were made by blowing a glass bubble, cutting off a small circular section, and filling it with molten lead.

The modern mirror-making process

Today, mirrors are made by applying a reflective coating to a piece of glass. This process involves several steps:

  • 1. Glass preparation

The glass is cut to the desired size and shape, then thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, dust or grease.

  • 2. Coating application

A thin layer of silver or aluminium is applied to the back of the glass. This is often done through a process called “silvering”, where a solution of silver nitrate is reduced to metallic silver and deposited on the glass.

  • 3. Protective coating

A layer of copper is applied over the silver to protect it from oxidation and scratching. A layer of paint is then applied to further protect the coating and provide a finished backing.

Mirrors cut to size

While some mirrors are mass-produced in standard sizes, many glass companies, like Bridgewater Glass, offer a bespoke mirror service. This involves cutting mirrors to custom sizes and shapes to suit the specific needs of our clients.

The process starts with a consultation to understand the customer’s requirements. The glass is then carefully measured and cut to size using specialised tools. The edges may be polished or bevelled for a finished look and to improve safety.

The benefits of bespoke mirrors

Opting for a bespoke mirror offers several advantages over off-the-shelf options:

With a bespoke mirror, you can choose the exact shape, size and style to suit your taste and the aesthetics of your room.

  • High quality

Bespoke mirrors are often made with higher-quality glass and coatings than mass-produced options.
